Have you ever suffered a broken bone? Perhaps an arm or even just a toe?

Let’s say you were to break your toe. It’s a pretty common injury after all. What you would probably do is visit your doctor, maybe have some x-rays taken, and he or she would tape your broken toe to a toe next to it and tell you to stay off of it for a while.

But you’re a busy business owner with clients to see, meetings to attend, and a business to run, so you don’t rest your toe for very long and start putting weight on it. Sure, you feel pain in the broken toe but it’s tolerable so you push through the pain and try not to put all of your weight on it with each step.

A few days later you start feeling pain in your foot, then your ankle, then your knee. What in the world? Did you injure those body parts, too? Not exactly but you made the choice to limp around on your broken toe for a week before giving it the necessary time to heal. That change in your gait forced your foot, ankle, and knee to compensate so the pain you’re feeling in those other body parts now is simply the residual pain from your broken toe.

The fact of the matter is, all of your organs, joints, tissues, and bones make up your body. It’s one unit so when one body part suffers, other body parts tend to suffer as well. They are inherently linked. The same rings true for your team. When one team member is suffering or underperforming if you will, other team members must compensate and the whole team winds up suffering in one form or another. And as you’ve probably heard, your team is only as strong as its weakest link.

That is one big reason why it’s necessary to build a strong team of capable members, and maintain it so no team member or department sabotages the growth and well-being of the business overall. Whether you have a small team, a large team, or are currently flying solo, there are steps you can take to help you develop and maintain a strong team.

In this episode of the Small Business Straight Talk Podcast, I dive into those steps so you can maximize the benefits of having a team composed of members who effectively support you in achieving your business goals.
