Some conversations are just tough, perhaps even painful.

Telling your parents you flunked an important test or crashed their car. Telling your spouse you have a gambling problem or you cheated on them. Telling your kid you’ll be out of town for their birthday or you’re getting divorced. And topics don’t even have to be that extreme to be tough.

We resist having all sorts of conversations because we fear what the other person will say, how they’ll act, or what they’ll think of us. Ever tried telling a vendor the quality of their product isn’t what it used to be? Or how about telling an employee their tardiness needs to stop and their professionalism improve? Not easy conversations to have. You hold strong opinions but are scared to voice them because you fear the unknown. What if the vendor feels deeply insulted and no longer wants to do business with you? What if the employee jumps ship with no notice?

Sometimes when we put off having tough conversations, they appear in our lives as held resentment, anxiety, insomnia. No good can come from shying away from conversations that need to be had in business, no matter how rough they are to approach.

In this episode of Productivity Straight Talk, I sit down with life coach David Wood who strongly believes the tough conversations we avoid are our doorways to confidence, success and even love - in both work and life. We dive into a healthy structure for approaching tough business conversations you want to avoid, a roadmap of sorts, so you can effect positive change, abolish resentment, reduce anxiety, and sleep better.
