For the past few weeks, it has seemed like summer vacation is in session at my house. With my husband not working and my son out of school, there are wrestling matches, Netflix marathons, and loud video games being played in the family room at all hours of the day. Life has seemed footloose and fancy-free.

When I open social media (and ignore all the political posts), there too, it seems everyone is on summer vacationā€¦ in the middle of the dayā€¦ during the middle of the workweek. My friends are posting pictures from their pools, hiking adventures, and bike rides down the Las Vegas Strip. Summer vacation looks fun!

You know who is not on summer vacation?

Me.

And if youā€™re a business owner, you.

Trust me, I am empathetic to your case. It is tough to see much of society pausing operations and enjoying some well-deserved free time while youā€™re chained to your desk trying to pivot during this crazy time, strategizing how youā€™re going to bring in business, show up for your clients, and fight to come out of this strong. I feel that loss, too.

I have not heard one single business owner say they have more time now. You likely have less time as you have to wear more hats than six weeks ago, abide by constantly changing rules, jump through hoops to tackle projects with your employees and vendors virtually, and homeschool your kids. Less time but more to do while non-business owning, non-ā€œessentialā€ workers and kids seem to be on summer vacation. That stings! And that recipe invites FOMO to strike hard.

But hereā€™s the thing.

If you allow yourself to fall prey to FOMO, it will do a number on your mindset, as well as your bottom line. The temptation to constantly dodge your work and experience the fun your family members and friends are having may be great, but you have to figure out a balance that will enable you to keep tackling the projects and tasks that push the needle forward in your business.

In this episode of Productivity Straight Talk, I dive into the topic of FOMO which most business owners suffer from occasionally, possibly even more so during this global pandemic. I discuss how Iā€˜ve personally been dealing with FOMO in my house, what I decided to do about it, and how you can prevent FOMO from taking a hold of your mindset now and in the future.
