If you’re on Facebook, you are probably bombarded with ads trying to sell you all sorts of products and services ranging from a skincare line that guarantees less wrinkles to a coaching program that promises more sales. Sure, a trendy product and flashy tagline might catch your eye but do you really trust the companies behind such ads? Would you be willing to risk a thousand dollars on even just a hundred dollars on a product or service from a brand that’s unknown to you? Maybe but probably not.
That’s because there’s no credibility or authority that comes along with a Facebook ad. There’s no real regulation either. Any old business with fifty bucks to spare can run a targeted Facebook ad for their product or service. They can also claim it achieves whatever miracle will get the most people to click the Buy Now button whether it really achieves the miracle or not. Any company can push their brand via marketing.
PR is different from marketing because not every Tom, Dick, and Mary company gets PR. Not every business is featured in the media and on a Top 10 list. PR must be earned. As industry insider Marin Richardson says, “If marketing is what you pay for, PR is what you pray for.” Good PR instantly makes you reputable and impresses potential clients. It gives your business authority and credibility, making people feel comfortable buying your product or service. Just think about it… are you more likely to buy from a company that doesn’t show up in Google search results or a company that shows up in 20 search results, all of which are articles and lists that name the company in a positive light?
