The other day I was scrolling Facebook and came across a meme I found to be pretty clever (and relevant).

It showed a teenaged student listening to his teacher talk about graphs and projections, thinking, ā€œIā€™m never going to need this knowledge in real life.ā€ That image was pictured right next to one of the ever-so-present ā€œflatten the curveā€ graphs flooding our news feeds and tv screens. As a naive high school student, I never dreamed Iā€™d be interpreting so many graphs each week either.

I also never thought Iā€™d be leaning on the laws of physics to be productive in my business. If my teacher had told us that, I probably would have paid a lot better attention in physics class (gotten a better grade, too!).

Newtonā€™s First Law of Physics states, ā€œAn object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.ā€

So how does that apply to business, you ask?

I see it like thisā€¦

If youā€™re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, out of time, and do nothing to change your circumstances (improve your productivity), youā€™re going to stay stuck, overwhelmed, and out of time.

If youā€™re working toward your goals, even if your progress is ever so slight, youā€™re going to keep progressing toward your goals and achieve bigger and bigger wins in your business, unless your circumstances are abruptly changed.

And that is the power of momentum!

Harnessing the power of momentum is my goal when I start working each day. I donā€™t dive right into my high-value activities right away (although that works for some). Iā€™m like an old car that needs to warm up for a few minutes.

So, I first tackle a few small, achievable tasks one at a time before diving into the high-value activities Iā€™ve scheduled for the morning. I use those small wins to build momentum in my energy and ability to focus, then I harness that momentum to throw at the most important tasks and projects that require my utmost attention.

Leaning on Newtonā€™s First Law of Motion has helped me create a snowball effect of getting shit done in my business each day and I want to arm you with that tool, too!

In this weekā€™s episode of Productivity Straight Talk, I dive into the topic of strategically building upon small wins in your business so you can generate unstoppable momentum and keep progressing toward your goals with energy and focus.
