Let’s have a real heart-to-heart for a second. When you hear the word "bookkeeper," does your stomach drop just a little bit? Maybe you are picturing a shoebox of crumpled receipts you have been ignoring for several months, or perhaps you are just terrified of what your numbers might actually say about your business.

It is completely normal to want to hide from the financial side of things, but avoiding those numbers is essentially flying your plane blindfolded. The truth is, your relationship with your bookkeeper or accountant shouldn't simply be transactional or filled with anxiety. It should be a collaborative partnership, one that actually empowers you to make better decisions without the stress. After all, your bookkeeper is not a mindreader so you cannot expect them to be. It’s important to talk with your bookkeeper regularly, let them know when things change, update them as your needs change, and at the same time determine what you can expect from them.

As  Misa Bacon, the founder and CEO of Perfectly Kept Books® says, “At the end of the day, the books belong to the business owner and you’re responsible for them.” Don’t just pass your books over and be hands-off. That is no way to get the results you want and have a solid understanding of your numbers so you can make informed business decisions. Back-and-forth collaboration is necessary. View your relationship with your bookkeeper as a two-sided partnership working toward a common goal.

In this week’s episode of the Small Business Straight Talk podcast, I sit down with the founder and CEO of Perfectly Kept Books®, Misa Bacon, to dive into the inner workings of your relationship with your bookkeeper and discuss specific strategies to make it a seamless back-and-forth collaboration that’s personalized to get the best results for you and your business.
