Have you ever been a victim of a scam, wire fraud, or cyberattack, either personally or professionally? I had only been a victim of attempts up until a few years ago when my husband’s identity was stolen. We were absolutely shocked at how easy it was for the criminal to impersonate my husband, access our bank accounts, and steal our hard-earned money. We were perhaps even more shocked at what a painstakingly long and tedious process it was to recover from it.

Recovering from an attack on your business could be incredibly challenging, that is, if you are able to recover at all! According to the National Cyber Security Alliance, approximately 60% of small businesses that experience a cyberattack close down within six months. This statistic highlights the devastating impact cyberattacks can have on small businesses, often due to a lack of resources or preparedness to recover from such incidents.

Scams, wire fraud, and cyberattacks are a real, existing threat to your small business - and not just to your direct profits, but to your website, orders, systems, reputation, and clients. After a ransomware attack or denial of service attack, you can’t take orders. You can’t do normal business operations. You can’t keep the machine running efficiently and profitably. It is a nightmare to recover from such an attack and makes every annoying two-factor authentication you’re put through totally worth the time and effort expended.

If you think you aren’t vulnerable, think again. Everyone is susceptible and as a small business owner, you don’t have a lot of room to recover from these sorts of attacks. That’s why it is incredibly important to know how hackers and cyber criminals are attacking and how to prevent those attacks from happening to you by not being an easy target. You must take preventative measures and educate your team members on the threats of scams, wire fraud, SIM card swaps, and other cybercrimes.

In this episode of the Small Business Straight Talk Podcast, I sit down with Cyber Resilience Specialist, Jeremiah Baker, to dive into the work he does to help small businesses protect themselves against cybercrime and discuss tips you can implement immediately to better protect yourself and your business from ransomware attacks, wire fraud, email account takeovers, and more.
