Social media, noisy co-workers, meetings, email, office gossip, or the temptation to surf the internet…
Do they really stop you or do you invite those distractions in, allowing them to inhibit you from working productively?
Maintaining the victim mindset that something is being done to you to prevent your productivity, keeps you on the treadmill of mediocrity. It ensures that you will never reach your full potential personally or professionally. As professionals and business owners it is our responsibility to create an environment that supports us in achieving maximum productivity. Once you take responsibility for your situation it will empower you to change it.
Do you find yourself saying?
- “I couldn’t because…”
- “I know it’s the right thing to do, but I…”
- “Well, if my boss would only…”
- “If my employees just…”
- “My business partner was supposed to…”
Excuses. Excuses. Excuses. We all have voiced excuses from time to time and once in a while they may actually be warranted, but typically they are not. This summer I found myself saying “My son is keeping me from working productively.” The truth is I was keeping myself from working productively because I was allowing him to walk into my office and distract me with questions and stories. I fixed my problem by waking every day up at 3:30am to accomplish my most important work – hours before he wakes up! You see, I had a choice and choosing to work at a different time of day made a huge difference in the amount of work I was able to accomplish. If I was not a morning person I could have waited until he went to bed to work on my highest priority items instead. What I needed and obtained for myself was just a few hours of focused work time each day. For the rest of the day I could work on less important items that would not suffer each time he interrupts my concentration.
The fact is that we all have a choice and that is a wonderful thing. You can choose to create an environment that fosters increased productivity for yourself and businesses.
