Jim Rohn says, “Time is our most valuable asset. Yet we tend to spend it, kill it, and waste it. Rather than invest it.” How are you investing in your time? Are you using it wisely or wasting it? Productive people become successful people because they consistently invest their time into their best activities. To be able to do that, they say no to more things than most people.
Did you do the same thing this morning that you did yesterday morning when you first woke up? Maybe you made a dash to the bathroom, brushed your teeth, or checked Facebook. Maybe you leaned over to kiss your sweetie, checked your emails, or stretched. Likely, you have weaved routines throughout your day and did not even realize it. After all, routines are just habits layered on top of each other.
Routines. Who wants them? Sounds boring. The word itself produces visions of structure, formality, rigidity, and restrictions. You may think of yourself as a free spirit and hate the idea of routines, but if you were to analyze one day in your life, you’d find you have routines weaved throughout your day. Routines are simply habits layered on top of each other that are performed in a specific sequence. We all have routines. Over time, they become automatic behaviors in our daily lives that we don’t even have to think about; we just do them. Routines are a force to be reckoned with. If you are not intentional with your time, you could be unintentionally creating routines based on bad habits which makes your productivity suffer. It’s important you make routines work for you, not against you.
Who has time for a break? Not me! I am certain you have said some version of those phrases to yourself more often than you would like. Perhaps you may feel that to be most productive the best choice is often to work right through the day, put in a straight 8 to 12 hours consistently, eat at your desk, and work right through possible breaks.
I mean, come on, who has time for a break?
Pause. Think about it. How long have you been sitting at your desk? 10 minutes? Three hours? Did you eat healthy today or make a run to the vending machine? When was the last time you took a break? If you are like many well-meaning entrepreneurs, you push yourself to the max working as hard as you can for as long as you can. You know your time is precious and finite after all. You wind up though, not taking care of yourself as you should and your work suffers. You can’t possibly keep burning more steam without adding coal to your fire. You need to power up your body. Taking breaks is a necessary part of refueling your system and doing so causes increased productivity – exactly what you need to accomplish more and maximize your success.
